While they have been the Tigers since 1896, a Tiger mascot did not cheer on Clemson at games until 1973. Before then, they were represented by The Country Gentleman, a man in a top-hat and purple tailcoat. The phrase “A Clemson man needs no introduction” originates from this time period.
